Texas Tech kicker Cory Fowler apparently will receive only a one-week audition as the Red Raiders' kicker after Fowler had two extra points blocked in the Red Raiders' 43-25 victory over Texas A&M last week.
"We're not going to keep Cory in there," Leach told reporters at his weekly press conference."We haven't decided what we are going to do."
Fowler was inserted into the lineup after regular kicker Donnie Carona struggled through the first six games of the season. Carona missed on eight extra points and field goals, including five kicks that were blocked.
Leach told reporters he's not sure what he will do when the Red Raiders meet Kansas in their pivotal game Saturday in Lawrence, Kan.
But the Tech coach later told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that he expects a rebound by Carona, the first scholarship kicker he has ever signed.
"Quite honestly, I think that Donnie's going to just be fine," Leach told the newspaper. "He needs to relax. I mean, it's not like anything's changed. The guy (he was) in high school would be more than satisfactory. As a matter of fact, he might lead the league around here. So all he needs to be is the guy (he was) in high school."
Leach also said that he might consider going for more two-point conversions.
"Might," he said. "I've never completely ruled that out to begin with."
Leach also grew testy -- an unusual trait for him -- when he was asked Monday how long his team could go before special-teams breakdowns cost the Red Raiders.
"We have to straighten out the kicking," Leach told the Avalanche-Journal. "Do you really feel like that's a good question? They already have hurt us. We've missed six extra points. It's cost us six points. You think I have a crystal ball? Next question."
