No 'Stoops Bowl' in the offing at the Sun Bowl

What better way to enliven Oklahoma's first trip to the Sun Bowl than staging the first "Stoops Bowl?"

The first coaching matchup between Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and his younger brother, Mike Stoops of Arizona, would have all kinds of appeal. It would likely lead to the most interest in the Sun Bowl in a long time.

But both Stoops brothers have said they would be "uncomfortable" coaching against the other.

"It'd be awkward, but we'd have to see what happens," Mike Stoops told the Arizona Daily Star earlier this week.

Those plans apparently won't come together, at least after Sun Bowl executive director John Fulmer said he would accede to their wishes and not stage the game.

"There's a pretty good chance we're going to get Oklahoma on the other end. If that were the case, and coach Stoops didn't want to play his brother, we'd honor that," Fulmer told the Daily Star.

Oklahoma's defense has never seemed the same after Mike Stoops left to take the Arizona job after the 2003 regular season ended. I think it would be a great game and even better theater to see the two Stoops brothers coach against each other.
