New Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman picked up the biggest victory of his short tenure as his Aggies stormed back for a 24-17 victory over Colorado today in College Station.
Perhaps most notably, the victory enabled Sherman to match the first-season win total of his predecessor, Dennis Franchione.
The way the Aggies (4-5) won was particularly noteworthy. A struggling defense made enough stops in the second half to allow sophomore quarterback Jerrod Johnson to lead the comeback. Freshman Trent Hunter provided two interceptions to spark the turnaround.
Johnson fired three touchdowns, including two to freshman wide receiver Jeff Fuller. Johnson has 18 touchdowns for the season against only four interceptions.
Sherman has to feel good about the contributions he's receiving from all of his young players. The future looks brighter for the Aggies after its modest two-game winning streak against Iowa State and the Buffaloes.
The victory gives them some momentum for a tough finish that will see them meet Oklahoma before road games at Baylor and Texas.
