Texas Tech chancellor Kent Hance has told redraidersports.com that he's going to make keeping coach Mike Leach a big priority.

Leach, 74-37 in his nine season at Texas, currently has the Red Raiders ranked No. 2 in the latest BCS standings. It's the highest ranking for the school in history.

Hance said the Tech administration is going to do everything in its power to keep the Red Raiders' coach.

"We are definitely going to keep Mike Leach," he told the Web site. "He's a great coach, he's a great guy and he's going to get a new contract at the end of the season.

"We are proud of him and we're looking forward to his next victories. I don't want to distract or do anything to distract him from taking care of business. We are going to take care of everything, and Mike Leach is going to be the coach at Texas Tech for a long time."

Leach signed a five-year extension in 2006 that boosted his annual average salary to $2 million. Offseason negotiations between Leach's representatives and Tech for a new extension were tabled before the beginning of the 2008 campaign and will be resumed after the season ends.

Gerald Myers said earlier this week he will begins talks in earnest with Leach's agent Gary O'Hagan as soon as Tech's season concludes.
