Big 12 title game exposes a nerve
By ESPN.com staff
Round 3 on our way to the most painful loss in college football history has arrived, and three Big 12 teams were involved in three games in Nos. 30-21 of our countdown.
29. Texas A&M loses 31-6 to Arkansas in 1975
The Aggies were 10-0 and hoping for a Southwest Conference title after 15 losing seasons in 16 years from 1958-73. Arkansas took the game and cost Texas A&M a national title, a league title and a trip to the Cotton Bowl.
23. Alabama loses 21-17 to Texas in the 1965 Orange Bowl
Alabama QB Joe Namath was denied on a sneak, but swore he crossed the goal line. That cost the Tide a national title in the first-ever night bowl game.
21. Kansas State loses 36-33 to Texas A&M in the 1998 Big 12 Championship
Probably the only game on this portion of the list you actually saw, the lost cost Bill Snyder and the Wildcats a trip to the Fiesta Bowl to play for a national title. Kansas State couldn't hold on to a 27-12 fourth-quarter lead, and the Aggies tied the game on a two-point conversion with 1:05 left. Texas A&M finally brought Wildcat tears out in double overtime.
