Dallas Morning News columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor opines on the subject I've heard from several e-mailers today.
Namely, was the biggest loser in the Will Muschamp promotion to head coach-in-waiting former Texas icon Major Applewhite?
There has been no more beloved football player over the years than Applewhite, a gritty quarterback who had success, handled demotions with class and then saved his biggest comeback for his final game.
After arriving at Texas from Alabama last season as the running backs coach, many Longhorn fans were counting Applewhite as an almost offensive coordinator-in-training working with his old coordinator, Greg Davis.
Muschamp's hiring effectively takes the biggest seat on the Forty Acres out of play as he replaces Mack Brown sometime in the next eight seasons. Will Applewhite get a shot at the offensive coordinator position one day? Will he become a head coach one day? Will he ever be the head coach at his alma mater?
All questions to be mulled over by Longhorn fans during the next few seasons. It should be an interesting time at Texas.
