Now it's getting a little clearer why veteran defensive coordinator Wally Burnham was willing to uproot his family from the toasty South Florida climate for a chance to go to work on Paul Rhoads' new staff at Iowa State.

Rhoads announced that Shane Burnham will be joining the Cyclones' staff as defensive tackles coach on his father's defensive staff. Shane is Burnham's son.

Shane Burnham arrives at ISU from Elon College, where he served as linebackers/defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator for the last four seasons.

"In all of our hires, in addition to their position assignments, I was looking for individuals who have recruited certain areas of the country," Rhoads said. "Shane fits what we needed on the defensive side of the ball and in recruiting background. I liked that he has coached all positions in the front seven. In addition to on-field success, Shane has recruited well on the West Coast of Florida. He recruited a significant number of players on the current Elon roster. The pieces all fit."

Shane Burnham is familiar with working his father before. He was a linebacker on South Carolina's team when Burnham coached the Gamecocks.

Two-fers are familiar across the recruiting trail where brothers will sometimes play on the same team.

Father -and-son coaching tandems aren't that rare, either. Lane Kiffin lured his father, veteran NFL coordinator Monte Kiffin, to join his staff at Tennessee. He also hired his brother-in-law, David Reaves, to become his quarterbacks coach.

And USC coach Pete Carroll hired his son Brennan, who now serves as the Trojans' tight ends coach.

Rhoads only hopes hiring the Burnhams works out as well for his program.
