Buried deep in Detroit News columnist Bob Wojnowski's Big 12 column earlier this week is a line from his radio partner, Mike Stone, of WDFN in Detroit extolling Texas Tech coach Mike Leach taking over the Detroit Lions.
Wojnowski's comment was that it would be a joke for Leach to come to Detroit.
I agree with him, but the other way around.
I know the NFL has a certain appeal to coaches, mainly because of megabuck salaries. But I can't see Leach having any interest in trying to clean up Matt Millen's mess. Daunte Culpepper and Drew Stanton as his quarterbacks might make Leach retreat into his coaching bunker and never come out.
This idea is taking the notion of a bailout for Detroit to outlandish stretches.
I know firsthand that Lubbock isn't a garden spot. But Detroit? You've got to be kidding me.
Leach might be quirky, off-beat and all that. But not so much so that I could ever imagine him in Hawaiian Blue and Silver.
