There's other news from across the conference than just the upcoming conference championship and the residue of the South Division BCS controversy. Here are some of the other more notable stories, along with a smidgen of championship and controversy spin thrown in to keep the pot bubbling.

  • Colorado coach Dan Hawkins is starting the use of "accountability groups" to involve Colorado players in self-policing the program, the Boulder Camera's Kyle Ringo writes. At least eight current or former members of the program were ticketed or arrested last winter and spring and five players became academically ineligible to play. Hawkins also told the Rocky Mountain News' B.G. Brooks that he doesn't foresee any staff changes. "I'll take my guys any day of the week," Hawkins told Brooks.
  • Fired Iowa State quarterbacks coach Tony Petersen told Bobby La Gesse of the Ames Tribune that he didn't see his ouster coming after overseeing Austin Arnaud's development this season. Petersen and secondary coach Shawn Raney were fired and offensive coordinator Robert McFarland and defensive coordinator Wayne Bolt were demoted in a weekend purge of Gene Chizik's staff.
  • The Waco Tribune-Herald's John Werner wonders how it can get much better than the drama seen in the Big 12 South Division this season.
  • Omaha World-Herald Lee Barfknect writes that a change in the Big 12's tiebreaker rule should be forthcoming after the recent controversy.
  • Ready for an upset? Omaha World-Herald columnist Tom Shatel is picking Missouri to stun Oklahoma Saturday night in the championship. Shatel also proposes another three-way tie involving South Division powers -- picking Texas' Colt McCoy, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell to share the All-Big 12 quarterback honors.
  • Former Iowa State coach Dan McCarney, currently the defensive line coach at Florida, has emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant head-coaching job at Toledo, according to the Toledo Blade's Maureen Fulton.
