West Virginia's depth at running back is being tested this spring, writes Mike Casazza of the Charleston Daily Mail. The Mountaineers have several different options at running back including Rushel Shell, Wendell Smallwood and Dontae Thomas-Williams but potential injuries means it is important for WVU to develop depth this spring after going four or five deep a year ago.
Yet the words of running back coach JaJuan Seider about Smallwood seem to stand out in Casazza's story.
“Up to this point in spring practice, he’s been probably the best player on the field,” Seider said. “Period.”
Smallwood has showed signs he could be a playmaker during his first two seasons for WVU. But if he takes his game to a different level, Smallwood could help replace the big plays Kevin White brought to the Mountaineers' offense, even though he plays a different position.
