The day started off with a bit of bad news for West Virginia, when the Mountaineers lost defensive back Michael Carter to Minnesota. But coach Bill Stewart was happy in the afternoon when junior college defensive lineman Tevita Finau faxed in his letter.

Finau had been committed to WVU for a long time, but he'd also signed twice before with the school so there was some nervousness about his arrival.

"Tevita is working very hard and I'm pleased he is a man of his word,” said Stewart. "He's chosen the Mountaineers over and over and over.”

West Virginia's 24-player class is regarded as one of the best in program history and among the tops in the Big East. It includes lots of skill players, like quarterback Eugene Smith, running back Tavon Austin and receiver Logan Heastie, who's already on campus.

"Since Logan has been with us they tell me he has already gained eight pounds,” Stewart said. "That's great.”
