Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh has officially resigned from the school to become the quarterbacks coach for the NFL's New York Jets.

The quarterback on Pitt's 1976 national championship team, Cavanaugh has been the Panthers' offensive coordinator since 2004.

"On behalf of our entire program, I would like to thank Matt for his invaluable contributions to Pitt the past four years," head coach Dave Wannstedt said in a statement. "On the field and behind the scenes, he has been passionately dedicated to what we are building. Although he departs for the NFL, I know Matt will always be a Pitt man and we certainly wish him only the very best with the New York Jets."

Wannstedt has yet to name a replacement.
