Just hours before the scheduled start of spring practice, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano announced the addition of two assistant coaches to his staff.
Former Maine defensive coordinator Robb Smith will be the Scarlet Knights' special teams coordinator and coach the outside linebackers, while ex-Syracuse running backs coach Randy Trivers will take that same position under Schiano.
Smith replaces Chris Rippon, who left the staff to pursue other opportunities. Trivers succeeds Gary Brown, who was hired to coach running backs for the Cleveland Browns.
At Maine, Smith presided over one of the top defenses annually in the FCS. He was named assistant head coach following the 2006 season.
Trivers coached Curtis Brinkley last year at Syracuse, helping the senior make history with five 100-yard rushing days and a 1,164-yard season. Prior to that, he was a high school head coach and was the coach of current Rutgers safety Joe Lefeged.
