Cincinnati-Oklahoma pregame ponderables

NORMAN, Okla. -- Greetings from Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where it's a postcard-perfect day outdoors.

The students were given free white visors when they entered the stadium in honor of OU coach Bob Stoops. If Cincinnati hangs around for a while, perhaps we'll see visors being thrown as if the stands were full of Steve Spurriers.

However, the Bearcats have never beaten a Top 5 team. The highest-ranked team Cincinnati ever took down was No. 7 Rutgers, two years ago. All-time, Cincinnati has gone 2-30 against top 10 teams and 0-14 vs. the top 5.

A few last-minute ponderables:

  • Cincinnati quarterback Dustin Grutza needs to play a great game. He won Big East offensive player of the week honors in his last two starts but those starts came against Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Kentucky. In other words, the competition level goes up today.

Grutza doesn't have the world's strongest arm, likes to scramble when he gets in trouble and didn't make great decisions earlier in his career. Against the speed of this Oklahoma defense, he'll have to be quick on his reads and try not to take many heavy licks if he takes off.
  • I think Cincinnati matches up fairly well in the ones vs. ones. But Oklahoma has far more depth and should be able to rotate in more players without losing much. This could play a major factor in the second half.
  • By the way, Cincinnati is spelled correctly this morning on the video screens.
  • In his column this morning in the Oklahoman, Berry Tramel wrote that the Cincinnati is good, but the Big East stinks. Tramel even asked a handful of Oklahoma players what conference Cincinnati belonged to, and only about half got it right. One even said the Pac-10, which as Tramel noted makes you wonder about the state of our nation's geography education.
