Connecticut is playing for the national title in men's basketball on Monday night. Why am I mentioning this in a football blog? Because the Huskies have accomplished a rare feat that includes football.
UConn, of course, made a BCS game as champion of the Big East, losing in the Fiesta Bowl to Oklahoma. The Huskies' women's basketball team also reached the Final Four before losing to Notre Dame.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, Connecticut is the first team in the BCS era to send its football team to a BCS game and men's and women's basketball teams to the Final Four in the same academic year.
The last time there was a similar accomplishment, Georgia had both of its hoops teams make the 1983 Final Four three months after Herschel Walker's team lost the Sugar Bowl to Penn State.
This is just the ninth time overall that both men's and women's teams from one school reached the Final Four. Some schools that did that and came close to also making a BCS game were 2005 LSU, 2002 Texas and 2001 Oklahoma.
But none pulled off the triple-header like this year's Huskies. So even if UConn comes up short against Butler on Monday night, it has been one heck of a year in Storrs.
