Connecticut receiver Mike Smith has been declared academically ineligible for 2011, a big blow to the Huskies' offense.

The Hartford Courant reports that Smith will still be practicing with the team and could use this season as a redshirt. Coach Paul Pasqualoni told the newspaper, "I do think this is a year that he can use to improve himself all the way around and then still have a final year of eligibility."

Smith led the team last season with 46 receptions for 615 yards and two touchdowns. His loss means that Connecticut will be without its top quarterback, receiver and running back going into 2011. The pressure will be on Kashif Moore to be the go-to guy and some of the young receivers like Geremy Davis and Tebucky Jones Jr.
