West Virginia was selected to win the Big East in the preseason media poll released Tuesday.
The Mountaineers got 21 of a possible 24 first-place votes in the voting done by media representatives from each of the eight Big East markets. They have won or shared the league title five times in the past eight years and have placed no lower than second in the standings in nine straight seasons.
There is plenty of excitement around West Virginia this season with the addition of Dana Holgorsen, who has one of the most dynamic players in the league returning in quarterback Geno Smith.
Pitt was picked second and got two first-place votes. The Panthers also have a new coach in Todd Graham, also bringing a high-powered offense to Pittsburgh.
USF was selected third and got the only other first-place vote.
Here is the predicted order of finish, with point total:
1. West Virginia, 188
2. Pitt, 162
3. USF, 151
4. Syracuse, 98
5. Cincinnati, 96
6. Connecticut, 76
7. Louisville, 60
8. Rutgers, 33
