Quarterback Dustin Grutza may miss the rest of Cincinnati's regular season.

Quarterback Dustin Grutza may not play again this season after suffering a broken leg against Oklahoma, Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said Monday on the Big East coaches' teleconference.

Grutza broke his right fibula and sustained damage in his ankle during the second half of the Sept. 6 game against the Sooners and underwent successful surgery last week. Kelly said Sunday that doctors have told him Grutza will need to spend three weeks in a cast.

"Then they start to move him around, and I think that's really where time is the issue," Kelly said. "Is it five weeks from there, is it four, is it eight weeks from there? I don't know if anybody has that answer until he gets out of the cast."

With that timetable, Grutza should be out of the cast by the end of this month. If it takes another month to fully heal, he could be back by November. If it's eight weeks, he'd be done for the regular season.

"We have to operate on the fact that he may not be able to play again this year," Kelly said.

Junior Tony Pike will make his first career start at quarterback this Saturday against Miami (Ohio). Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones may also see some time, but Kelly said he doesn't think his team has a true No. 2 quarterback right now.
