TCU is in discussions with the Big 12 about joining the conference, a move that would deal the Big East yet another blow. Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds confirmed the Horned Frogs have been invited to join the league.

TCU chancellor Victor Boschini Jr. issued this statement Thursday afternoon. The school planned no other comment today.

"These discussions with the Big 12 have huge implications for TCU," he said in his statement. It will allow us to return to old rivalries, something our fans and others have been advocating for many years. As always, we must consider what’s best for TCU and our student-athletes in this ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics. We look forward to continuing these discussions with the Big 12."

Dodd said in his statement: "We’re proud that TCU has been invited to join the Big 12. Their commitment to academics and success on the field make them an excellent fit. With a solid budget and strong financial support, they have been proactive at improving facilities. Their close proximity to all conference institutions makes for a comfortable travel situation."

TCU becomes the third team to leave the Big East in a month, joining Pitt and Syracuse out the door. Those two schools are headed to the ACC. But the Horned Frogs never played in the Big East. Last year, they agreed to leave the Mountain West to join the Big East for the start of the 2012 season. But as the conference landscape has changed, its plans appear to have changed. TCU would be subject to a $5 million buyout, but not the 27-month waiting period because it is not yet a member of the league.

Last Sunday, TCU attended a meeting of all Big East presidents and chancellors, when which they agreed to let commissioner John Marinatto pursue expansion "aggressively." But clearly the Big East cannot do much pursuing if it cannot hold onto is membership.
