Back in August, I came up with a list of breakthrough players for each team in the Big East. With the regular season already a quarter of the way over for some teams and a third of the way finished for UConn after tonight (hard to believe, I know), let's see how those players have performed so far:
Jock Sanders, WR/RB, West Virginia: Sanders is the Mountaineers' leading receiver, with 12 catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns. He's also rushed nine times for 58 yards. West Virginia just needs to find more guys with that kind of production.
Connor Barwin, DE, Cincinnati: The converted tight end leads the team with two sacks and three tackles for loss. He did most of his damage in the opener against Eastern Kentucky and got contained by Oklahoma's offensive line.
A.J. Love, WR, South Florida: Love has become a dependable weapon for Matt Grothe, catching 11 balls for 156 yards and a touchdown. His score came in the Kansas game.
Greg Romeus, DE, Pittsburgh: Romeus leads the team with three tackles for loss, but he and the rest of the Pitt defense will have to play better tomorrow against Iowa.
Doug Beaumont, WR, Louisville: After not recording a catch as a freshman, Beaumont has blossomed into the Cardinals' main target. He has 23 receptions -- more than twice as many as any other Louisville wideout -- for 279 yards. He hauled in nine balls for 119 yards versus Kansas State. Still looking for his first touchdown, though.
Kordell Young, RB, Rutgers: Started off well with 26 carries for 94 yards and a score against Fresno State. That might have been a bit too much of a workload for a guy coming off knee surgery, however. He missed the next game with knee soreness.
Moe Petrus, LG, Connecticut: Petrus has started all three games, and while it's hard to quantify with numbers how the redshirt freshman has played, the offensive line has opened enough holes for Donald Brown to become the nation's second leading rusher.
Tony Fiammetta, FB, Syracuse: Fiammetta hasn't been a big factor offensively, though he has caught five passes for 34 yards. Then again, Syracuse isn't exactly swimming in breakout stars at the moment.
