1. Cincinnati (4-0, 1-0 Big East): Look who just crashed the top 10. The Bearcats survived an upset bid by Fresno State, and barring an all-out disaster this week against winless Miami (Ohio), should be off to a 5-0 start heading into a bye week.

2. South Florida (4-0): The Bulls move up to No. 2 after their impressive 17-7 win at Florida State. Coaches would make me run laps for looking ahead, but if South Florida can get past Syracuse this week, it sets up a potential Big East game of the year on Oct. 15 when Cincinnati comes to Tampa.

3. West Virginia (2-1): The Mountaineers had last week off as they hopefully addressed their turnover problems. Beating a down Colorado team this Thursday night in Morgantown is a must.

4. Pittsburgh (3-1): The Panthers have apparently forgotten their identity, scoring in bunches but allowing way too many points and yards on defense. It's hard to figure what's wrong with this team and whether it just needs to right the ship like after last year's loss to Rutgers or if there are bigger, fundamental concerns.

5. Connecticut (3-1): The Huskies could make a strong argument for being ranked ahead of Pitt this week, since they have a better win (at Baylor) than the Panthers currently boast. No matter. We'll settle this next week when UConn and Pitt meet at Heinz Field.

T-6. Rutgers (3-1, 0-1): The Scarlet Knights beat Maryland, but who can't do that? A week off should help Tom Savage heal, and this team definitely needs to cure its offensive ailments.

T-6. Syracuse (2-2): The Orange have the same number of wins over BCS conference teams as Rutgers and a better one (Northwestern) to boot. The Orange can prove themselves at home against South Florida on Saturday.

8. Louisville (1-2): The Cardinals are looking down the barrel of a 1-3 start -- followed by a date with dangerous Southern Miss and two Big East road games -- unless they can put a whole game together and beat Pitt at home Friday night.
