USF opens spring camp today. Here is a quick primer on what to expect.
Spring changes: The Bulls welcome in new defensive coordinator Chris Cosh, who replaces Mark Snyder. Cosh is the third defensive coordinator in four years for these players, but the good news is he runs a 4-3 approach that should at least keep some continuity. The focus is going to be developing a much more aggressive, physical, disciplined attitude. Coach Skip Holtz also rearranged his offensive staff. Offensive coordinator Todd Fitch will now work with the quarterbacks, while quarterbacks coach Peter Vaas moves to tight ends and tight ends coach Larry Scott moves to running backs. The Bulls return one of the most veteran teams in the Big East, but there are some definite holes to fill heading into the spring.
Position battles to watch
Offensive line. The Bulls lose their two most experienced linemen in center Chaz Hine and left guard Jeremiah Warren. There are several candidates at each position. Watch for Austin Reiter at center, with Thor Jozwiak being limited this spring; Brynjar Gudmundsson and junior college transfer Lawrence Martin will get first crack at guard. Also, remember this will be the third different center B.J. Daniels has worked with in the past three seasons. The Bulls are probably going to try to work a bunch of different players at the two positions to see who fits best.
Defensive line. USF loses end Patrick Hampton and tackle Keith McCaskill, but there were some players who emerged on the line last season, particularly Julius Forte and Elkino Watson. Still, you can bet the Bulls are going to want to develop some depth at this position, especially since it was one of the strengths of the defense last season.
Defensive back. Starters Quenton Washington and Jerrell Young are gone, and this is a particular area in need of improvement and depth development headed into the spring. Watch out for junior college transfers Fidel Montgomery and Joshua Brown, who were signed with the idea that they would be able to contribute right away. Holtz made mention of them during his pre-spring practice news conference. Veterans JaQuez Jenkins and Mark Joyce need to take their game up a level as well.
