Syracuse will name the football field in the Carrier Dome "Ernie Davis Legends Field" in a ceremony at halftime of the Oct. 10 game against West Virginia.

The school is honoring the late 1961 Heisman Trophy winner, who had a movie -- "The Express" -- about him come out last year.

The idea came from donors Sam and Carol Nappi, the school said.

"It is our hope that Ernie Davis Legends Field at the Carrier Dome will remind people of the courage, athleticism, honor, dignity and grace of a man and his teammates who gave their all to make this world a better place," the Nappis said in a statement released by Syracuse.

The Carrier Corp., which bought naming rights to the dome in 1980, amended its contract to allow for the naming of the field, school officials said.
