There just may be a new Big East record set this year for career total offense.
Got your guess?
That would be USF quarterback B.J. Daniels, going into his fourth year as a starter. Though Daniels has taken his share of grief for falling short of expectations, he has put up some pretty big numbers over the course of his career because of his ability to run with the football. That, combined with starting 33 games, has him squarely in sight of the record books.
Daniels had his best statistical season in 2011, even though USF finished 5-7. He had a career-high 3,205 yards of total offense, giving him 7,992 yards for his career. That ranks eighth on the Big East career total offense chart and puts him 2,883 yards behind former USF quarterback Matt Grothe, who holds the record with 10,875 yards.
What are the chances it happens? Well, Daniels has averaged 2,635 yards a season in total offense. If he is between his average and his career best, then Daniels breaks the mark. Coach Skip Holtz talked at length this spring about the improvements Daniels made last season, and his expectation for more in 2012.
Indeed, Daniels' return is one of the reasons why USF has picked up steam of late among those making their preseason predictions. Of course, there are those who believe Daniels will never take that big step many have waited on since he was forced into the lineup as a freshman. As I wrote this spring, it is no overstatement to say it is now or never for Daniels.
He may end up with his name at the top of a pretty big league record.
