Whitmer seemed to move ahead in the race to become the starting quarterback in the spring, particularly after he had the best spring-game performance of all the quarterbacks. Johnny McEntee, who started last year, goes into camp as the backup. UConn opens practice Friday.
True freshman Casey Cochran is out with a broken wrist, and could redshirt. Pasqualoni is hopeful that Cochran will be able to participate sooner rather than later, and Cochran will be on the practice field and in all meetings to keep up with everything that is going on.
Also Thursday, Pasqualoni announced that Wildcat-formation quarterback Scott McCummings will miss the beginning of camp for an excused personal reason. Sophomore Michael Nebrich also is in the quarterback mix.
Pasqualoni was asked about the quarterback rotation headed into camp during Big East media day. He gave no indication that Whitmer would be No. 1. He said, "As we get into this and we get ready for practice, our policy is that we distribute the reps based on the number of drills and plays that we have on the practice schedule. So we’re going to distribute the reps pretty equally in an effort to get a good look at each quarterback. We’ll handle it exactly the same as we would for any other position. It will just be standard operating procedure for us."
