When Greg Paulus plays against West Virginia on Saturday, it won't be the first time the Syracuse quarterback has faced the Mountaineers in a big spot.
As Mike Casazza points out in the Charleston Daily Mail, Paulus was the point guard for Duke when West Virginia beat the Blue Devils in the second round of the 2008 NCAA tournament. The Mountaineers took obvious glee in beating the more-hyped program, including this moment as relayed by The New York Times.
"As a reporter was leaving, the [West Virginia] reserve Cam Thoroughman asked if Duke point guard Greg Paulus was one of the eight McDonald’s all-Americans. When told yes, Thoroughman said: “Oh my God. Are you kidding?”"
Casazza writes that Paulus was asked about that quote this week.
"I did not read about that and I don't usually do that, but they beat us and that's what happened," was all Paulus would say.
One wonders if now Paulus is thinking about that. He seems like a pretty level-headed guy who wouldn't get caught up in that kind of stuff, especially from a 2-year-old basketball game. But he's also a very competitive player.
If nothing else, maybe they can set up a basketball court at the Carrier Dome after the football game and let Paulus go one-on-one with Jarrett Brown. Who ya got in that one?
