Bulls fans might want to avoid their eyes as we back, back, back it up ...
Best Game: Pittsburgh's 26-21 upset at South Florida last Thursday had a little bit of everything. Pressure on an undefeated team. Special teams scores and fake punts. A last ditch attempt to win by the Bulls. In the end, it provided the biggest shakeup to the Big East power structure yet.
Biggest play: Defensive lineman Scooter Berry dropped back in pass coverage for West Virginia and broke up Rutgers quarterback Mike Teel's pass on 4th-and-5. That preserved the Mountaineers' 24-17 victory.Big Man on Campus (Offense): Shady shined for Pittsburgh. LeSean "Shady" McCoy powered the Panthers with 142 yards on 28 carries and two touchdowns.
Big Man on Campus (Defense): Pittsburgh linebacker Scott McKillop had a team-high 12 tackles and added two sacks, another tackle for a loss and a key stop on a fake field goal to lead the Panthers' strong defensive effort.
Big Man on Campus (Special Teams): Cincinnati defensive end Connor Barwin blocked a punt for a safety and deflected another one in the Bearcats' 33-10 win at Marshall.
Worst Hangover: South Florida. This sure looks like the Bulls' best team, and this was supposed to be the year they put it all together and avoided the head-scratching mid-season lapses that have continually haunted them. No dice. A surprisingly listless performance against Pitt suddenly has South Florida in an early 0-1 hole in the Big East race.
Strangest coaching decision: Leading by a touchdown and facing a 4th and 1 near midfield with two minutes left, West Virginia coach Bill Stewart decided to go for it. Jarrett Brown lined up in the shotgun and tried a quarterback draw but was stuffed for a nine-yard loss, giving Rutgers great field position. The Scarlet Knights didn't do much with it, but Stewart would have heard howls from border to border if they had gone in and scored the tying touchdown.
Weirdest moment: In the third quarter of the North Carolina-Connecticut game, both banks of lights on the Huskies' side of the field went out, causing a 22-minute delay and leaving half of Kenan Stadium in the dark. There's no truth to the rumor that UConn coach Randy Edsall pulled the plug to hide his team's performance in the humbling 38-12 defeat.
Now let's look ahead to Week 7. All I can say about this slate is it's the kind of week that makes you long for the start of basketball practice. Games listed in descending order of importance.Rutgers (1-4, 0-1) at Cincinnati (4-1): The Bearcats become the last BCS team to open conference play, and they get a Scarlet Knights team desperate for a victory. Can Chazz Anderson direct the offense in a conference game as well as he did against Marshall?
Syracuse (1-4, 0-1) at West Virginia (3-2, 1-0): The Mountaineers have outscored Syracuse 96-31 in the past two years. They haven't been putting up points like they used to, but the Orange defense can cure a lot of ills.
Louisville (2-2, 0-1) at Memphis (3-3): Two old rivals meet for the first time since the Cardinals left Conference USA for the Big East. Tigers' fans are still bitter about being left behind and would love nothing more than to beat their former conference mates.
Byes: Pittsburgh, South Florida, Connecticut.
