Cincinnati likely won't release an update on quarterback Tony Pike until Monday.
Pike sprained his left wrist late in the first half of Thursday night's win at South Florida, then further injured himself on his lone series of the second half. Head coach Brian Kelly said a plate that had been inserted into his arm last year shifted, causing concern that Pike may need surgery. Kelly said after the game that Pike would not be ready for the Oct. 24 game against Louisville.
Pike is seeing a specialist this afternoon. But with Kelly going to former employer Grand Valley State this weekend to be honored, he probably won't provide an update until Monday's Big East coaches' teleconference. There is early word from some insiders that the injury might not be as serious as first believed and that Pike could possibly play through it, but that won't be known for sure until he confers with doctors.
Zach Collaros came in for Pike and ran for 132 yards while leading Cincinnati to two touchdown drives. Kelly would not commit to Collaros as his starter against Louisville if Pike was unavailable, saying Chazz Anderson would also be in the mix. Anderson started and won two games for Cincinnati last season.
