West Virginia lost Jarrett Brown early in the first quarter and had to turn to true freshman Geno Smith at quarterback. The Mountaineers trailed hungry in-state rival Marshall 7-3 at halftime.

But Smith has played well in the second half, the defense has shut down the Thundering Herd and Noel Devine has gone over 100 yards with two touchdowns.

West Virginia will survive this game, which is great news under the circumstances. Once the final horn sounds, it's time to start worrying about Brown, who has a possible concussion. Losing him for an extended period of time could be very damaging to the team's Big East hopes. No matter how talented Smith is, he's still a true freshman.
