Rutgers defensive coordinator Robb Smith has left to become linebackers coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, forcing coach Kyle Flood to now replace both of his coordinators.
Flood already was in the market for a new offensive coordinator after Dave Brock left to become head coach at Delaware. Reports indicate he may be leaning toward former Kansas State coach Ron Prince to fill that role. As for a replacement for Smith, Flood could look on his own staff and promote linebackers coach Dave Cohen.
Smith was promoted to defensive coordinator last season when Greg Schiano left for Tampa Bay. Smith learned working under Schiano and took the most talented defense in the Big East to one of the top units in the nation. Rutgers ranked No. 4 in the country in scoring defense, No. 6 in rushing defense and No. 10 in total defense. Khaseem Greene repeated as Big East Defensive Player of the Year and three defensive players were just invited to the NFL combine.
Since leaving Rutgers, Schiano has enjoyed dipping into his former assistant talent pool. Smith becomes the ninth former Rutgers assistant to join the staff in Tampa.
