Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly offered a brief update on injured quarterback Tony Pike at Tuesday's news conference.
Kelly said Pike will be fitted with a brace on his injured left arm and should start going through full practice reps on Wednesday. Pike saw a doctor on Tuesday morning, and Kelly said "we're seeing some good signs" in the X-rays.
The new brace should allow Pike to go through regular motions at practice, whereas right now he's just throwing the ball around with a cast on, Kelly said.
Kelly said he's not sure what to expect until he sees Pike at practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He said there could be a situation where Pike could play as a backup if needed to Zach Collaros on Saturday versus UConn.
"But I would prefer that not to be the case," he said. "I'd prefer him to be 100 percent and be able to start."
Kelly also said that tight end Ben Guidugli, who suffered a concussion against Syracuse, will go through exertion tests today. If he passes those, he'll be cleared to play Saturday. Guidugli tried to get back in the game at Syracuse.
"We had to hide his helmet six different times on the sideline," Kelly said.
Kelly also said that running back John Goebel, who missed most of the early season with a hamstring problem, broke his hand at Syracuse. He'll be available for special teams but likely won't get any carries.
