Connecticut made a statement today with a huge win over Cincinnati.
The Huskies snapped their two-game losing streak and handed the Bearcats their first conference loss. Only two Big East teams now remain undefeated in league play: Pittsburgh (which is playing Rutgers right now) and West Virginia.
UConn did things today that it hadn't done well in recent games. The kicking game, despite an early turnover, played a big role, as new placekicker Dave Teggart was 3-for-3. And the kick coverage team forced a turnover.
Meanwhile, Randy Edsall told critics who thought his offense was too vanilla to shove it. Cody Endres, starting for the first time in his career in place of Zach Frazer, tossed it 42 times. He only completed 18, but UConn still showed it would throw the ball. Not that it has to that much, because Donald Brown had another outstanding game, running for another 150 yards.
The Bearcats, on the other hand, have problems. They were awful again on third down for the second straight game, going 0-for-14. Combine that with the 0-for-11 showing on third down last game against Rutgers, and you have a crisis on your hands.
Cincinnati committed five turnovers, including four interceptions. The quarterback situation remains sketchy. Tony Pike was lifted for Chazz Anderson in the second half, and neither played all very well.
Brian Kelly will have to regroup quickly in time for Thursday's visit from South Florida. Meanwhile, UConn announced that it's still in the Big East hunt.
