It didn't take long for reporters to ask South Florida coach Jim Leavitt about the new opening at Kansas State.

The Wildcats announced on Wednesday afternoon that head coach Ron Prince would not be returning next season. Leavitt is an obvious target for K-State; he served as an assistant under Wildcats program architect Bill Snyder from 1990-95 and was co-defensive coordinator when he left to start South Florida from scratch. He also reportedly was wooed for the job during the search that landed Prince.

Reporters asked Leavitt about the situation after practice tonight. As Greg Auman reports in the St. Petersburg Times, Leavitt didn't issue a blanket denial of interest but said, "You guys know this (South Florida) is my heart and soul. I'm very fortunate to be here. I think it's the best job in the country."

Interesting day for Leavitt. Earlier, The Tampa Tribune's Brett McMurphy wrote a story that questioned whether he has taken the Bulls as far as they can go. South Florida has cracked the Top 10 each of the past two seasons but immediately followed that up with losing streaks. The Bulls have never finished with fewer than four losses since they joined a conference and are 6-3 this year after a 5-0 start.
