Strong breaks Big East barrier

One of the best developments in college football right now is the increase in hiring of African-American head coaches. For far too long there's been a color barrier at the top of college football's programs.

Louisville's hiring of Charlie Strong gives the Big East just its second African-American head coach in the league's history. The first was Ron Dickerson, who coached at Temple from 1993-97.

None of the current Big East schools have had an African-American coach since the league started football in 1991. Strong is the second African-American head coach at Louisville, following Ron Cooper (1995-97). That was before the Cardinals joined the Big East.

Let's hope this trend of more diversity on the sideline continues in the future.
