Nassib named BE Scholar Athlete of Year
By Andrea Adelson
Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib was selected the 2012 American Eagle Outfitters Big East Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Thursday.
The selection was made by the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee and is presented on the basis of academic credentials and athletic performance. Nassib will receive a $2,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies. In addition, Nassib was chosen as Syracuse’s Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete, giving him another $2,000 award.
Last season, Nassib broke his own single-season school marks for completions (294) and passing yards (3,749), and set a school record with 26 touchdown passes.
He finished his career as the Big East leader in completed passes (791), and ranks fourth all-time with 9,190 passing yards. Both marks are school records. His 70 career touchdown passes rank second in Big East history, and his six 300-yard games are good for third all-time.
In the classroom, Nassib has a 3.833 grade-point average as an accounting major in Syracuse’s graduate program. He earned his undergraduate degree in accounting and finance with a 3.572 GPA. Last year, Nassib was one of 15 players nationally to be awarded a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award.
In addition, the Big East announced 207 players were chosen to the Big East All-Academic Team. Cincinnati led the Big East with 32 players on the team.
