Off to Champaign with an eye on Arizona

I'm about to hit the road to Champaign, Ill., where I'll spend the day visiting with head coach Ron Zook, new coordinators Paul Petrino and Vic Koenning and the rest of the Illinois Fighting Illini. No Big Ten team underwent a bigger makeover than Illinois during the offseason, so it'll be interesting to see how the Illini are doing this spring.

Of course, I'll continue to monitor BCS meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz., where Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany will meet with reporters today. Delany likely won't make any major announcement about the Big Ten's expansion study, which no longer appears to be accelerated, but he hasn't addressed expansion publicly for quite some time, so his media session is significant. Pac-10 blogger Ted Miller will be on hand throughout the BCS meetings, and you can follow him here.

Delany's commissioner colleagues say the Big Ten's original expansion study timetable, 12-18 months, is still in effect. But I'd be surprised if we don't hear something more out of BCS meetings, or at least by the time the Big Ten coaches and athletics directors meet next month in Chicago. The Big Ten wants to be thorough, but the league also has been the national pacesetter on expansion since December, and in my opinion, its aggressive approach is paying off.

Stay tuned.
