Miami (Ohio) has hired its new head football coach, and to some surprise, he's not a Big Ten assistant.

Illinois co-defensive coordinator Curt Mallory and Michigan State offensive coordinator Don Treadwell had emerged as leading candidates for the RedHawks' head-coaching position, but Miami ended up going with Notre Dame offensive coordinator Michael Haywood, ESPN's Joe Schad reports.

Illinois head coach Ron Zook, a Miami (Ohio) alum, had lobbied for Mallory to get the job. Zook likely will have Mallory on staff again for 2009 alongside co-coordinator Dan Disch.

Barring an unforeseen move, Treadwell will return to Michigan State, where his son, Blake, a standout prep offensive lineman, will enroll next year. Don Treadwell played and coached for Miami (Ohio).
