The Kansas City Chiefs are intensifying their search for a new head coach, and Kirk Ferentz's name has come up in NFL circles as a candidate to talk with the team.
But Ferentz told ESPN.com senior writer Ivan Maisel on Wednesday that he's "not an entrant in the race." The Iowa head coach also told Maisel that having his son, James, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, in the program is a "big factor" in his career outlook.
Ferentz has been linked to the Chiefs job through new general manager Scott Pioli. The two men are friends from Ferentz's NFL days, and a Boston Herald report in December said if Pioli got a GM job, Ferentz would be his top choice as a head coach.
Iowa, meanwhile, unveiled its 2009 recruiting class this afternoon. The 19-man class features seven players from Iowa, including wide receiver Keenan Davis and tight end Conor Boffeli.
Other highlights of a small but solid class include running back Brandon Wegher and offensive lineman Nolan MacMillan.
Iowa has a young core returning from the Outback Bowl team, so this is more of a supplementary class than anything else. The Hawkeyes built depth at linebacker and along the offensive line, and the skill-position additions of Wegher, Davis and Boffeli are key.
