STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Greetings from Happy Valley, where Penn State's Joe Paterno tries to become the first major college coach to record 400 career victories.

The Northwestern Wildcats are here to spoil the party.

Penn State is a win away from becoming bowl eligible after recording back-to-back victories against Minnesota and Michigan. The Nittany Lions have looked like a more confident team following the bye week, especially on offense despite the loss of starting quarterback Rob Bolden. Everyone is here to see the 83-year-old Paterno reach another milestone, and there are even JoePa No. 400 T-shirts already being sold along College Avenue.

Speaking of merchandise, I've never seen a better selection of stores and items than the one here in State College. A lot of great novelties.

I arrived early today and had a chance to walk through campus and downtown. Even made a stop at the Creamery. Yum.

Northwestern became bowl eligible for the fourth consecutive season after beating Indiana last week. The Wildcats lack any signature victories, but they're 4-0 on the road, 8-2 in their last 10 conference road games and 6-1 in November games the last two seasons. NU, however, has only one victory at Beaver Stadium.

Penn State has yet to officially announce its starting quarterback, although Bolden should take the first snap. Sophomore Matt McGloin also could play.

Speaking of quarterbacks, Northwestern's Dan Persa returns to his home state to face a team that admittedly overlooked him in recruiting.

It's cloudy right now and we might see a shower or two, but nothing too severe.

I'll have much more from Beaver Stadium throughout the day, so don't go anywhere.
