Spartans' Winston sentenced to 180 days in jail

Winston, who last month pleaded guilty to misdemeanor aggravated assault and misdemeanor assault and battery, will begin serving his sentence Friday. There's a litany of other penalties for the 19-year-old Winston, who was suspended indefinitely from the team following his guilty plea in March.
Sturges suffered severe injuries during the fight and was hospitalized.
No word yet from Michigan State on whether Winston's status with the team has changed.
Winston's jail term expires Oct. 14, midway through Michigan State's season. If he's not dismissed from the team entirely, I can't see him competing this fall for the Spartans.
Winston likely would have entered spring ball as Michigan State's primary kick returner after leading the team in runbacks (16) and return yards (364) in seven games last fall.
Michigan State's student newspaper, The State News, has some more details about the Oct. 19 fight, which reportedly started between football player Mitchell White and hockey player Andrew Conboy. White last month pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
