Minnesota wideout Smith to transfer

Minnesota sophomore wide receiver Brodrick Smith has decided to transfer, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.
Smith, a native of Garden City, Kan., appeared in 12 games as a freshman last season and recorded five receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown. He was expected to take on a larger role this fall, though the Gophers boast plenty of young talent at wideout with Troy Stoudermire, Brandon Green and others.
Smith caught two touchdowns in Minnesota's spring game, including a 59-yarder from MarQueis Gray.
"Brodrick is planning to transfer closer to home," head coach Tim Brewster said in a statement. "He has a young son and would like to be closer to him. I admire Brodrick's decision and commitment to his son. We wish him the best of luck in the future."
Smith's father, Lawrence Tolbert, played wide receiver at Kansas State.
