Michigan AD: No offers to Miles, Harbaugh

1/12/2011

New Michigan coach Brady Hoke will step to the podium around 1 p.m. ET today, but his boss was doing plenty of talking after making the hire Tuesday.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon sounds very pleased with Hoke, telling The Detroit News, "This is what he's worked his entire career to be able to do. He is determined to be successful here. I've always believed you never underestimate the power of someone who has something to prove."

Brandon didn't reveal too many specifics of the search in several media interviews Tuesday night, but he told The Associated Press' Larry Lage that Michigan never offered the job to Jim Harbaugh or Les Miles, considered by many as the top two candidates for the job.

"The job was never offered to them," Brandon said in an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday after informing the team of his decision. "We did have different discussions with them that were helpful and positive."

Hmmmm. Interesting.

It certainly sounds like Hoke was very high on Michigan's list from the beginning. When it became very likely Harbaugh wouldn't be available, Michigan seemed to lock in on the former Wolverines assistant.

But there's also this from Brandon:

"I wanted to get to a lot of people, and I wanted to get busy meeting face-to-face, and when it was not face-to-face it was over the phone. I wanted to go out there and really test the market and understand the people out there, how they thought and how they matched. I feel very good about this. I talked to and met with coaches from several different conferences, who represented several different styles of play, and had different personalities. It helps when you put them up to compare, and see who is the best fit. I am confident I made the right choice."

Although the fan reaction hasn't been overly favorable, both current and former Michigan players seem to like the hire, judging by Twitter.

Here are a few examples:

Current Michigan receiver Kelvin Grady: "Stop watching the news.. We have our coach we greet him tomorrow and everyone. (EVERYONE) is staying. Why? Cause those who stay will be?"

Former receiver Braylon Edwards: "I want to congratulate #BradyHoke on getting the UofM job, he coached there my 1st 2yrs, he's a good friend of mine & a great coach #GoBlue"

Current cornerback Troy Woolfolk: "He is a Michigan man I'll take him with open arms. Im still happy. Hoke baby!!!!"

Former linebacker Dhani Jones: "Congrats to @DaveBrandonAD on the hire of @BradyHoke. He has felt a @michigan_fball Championship...time to return! #goblue #michiganman"

I'll have more after Michigan's news conference this afternoon.
