CHICAGO -- From the moment Will Campbell set foot on Michigan's campus, Wolverines fans have waited for the big man to do big things.
They're still waiting.
Campbell has recorded only five tackles and three pass breakups in his first two seasons. He has appeared in 25 games, mostly on special teams, and switched from defensive tackle to guard late last fall, only to move back to defense following the coaching change.
Weight has been an issue for the 6-foot-5, 333-pound junior, and some have questioned his motivation. But the potential is there -- both major Detroit newspapers labeled Campbell as the top high school player in Michigan in the 2009 class -- and new defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is doing what he can to bring it out this season.
"[Mattison] said, 'We're not going to run this defense if we don't have a 3-technique that can get the job done,'" Wolverines standout defensive tackle Mike Martin said. "He's talking right to Will. Even during condition, he would call him out and say, 'We need you. We need a 3-technique. If you can't do it, you just let me know. No hard feelings.'"
Mattison's message seems to be reaching Campbell, projected to start alongside Martin in Michigan's 4-3 set.
"Will's done a great job of stepping up to the plate," Martin said. "I'm really proud of how he's progressed."
