The allegations by a former Miami booster that he gave Hurricanes players gifts and other benefits has tentacles that reach into the Big Ten.
Purdue quarterback Robert Marve, who transferred from Miami, was one of the players booster Nevin Shapiro mentioned in a Yahoo! Sports report. Shapiro alleged that he gave Marve drinks and VIP access to strip clubs, provided food, drinks and entertainment at his mansion and at least one cash gift, among other services. The story includes a photo of Marve with Shapiro that Shapiro said was taken in his VIP section of a nightclub.
Purdue officials declined to comment on the story to the Lafayette Journal & Courier but said they would cooperate with an NCAA investigation. While none of the allegations involve the Boilermakers, obviously, Purdue could be at risk for playing an ineligible player, depending on how the investigation goes. Marve is battling Rob Henry for the starting quarterback job this fall.
Marve is not the only Big Ten figure mentioned in that sweeping series of stories from Yahoo! Sports. Shapiro said former Nebraska defensive end Bernard Thomas, a friend of former Hurricanes player D.J. Williams, came down to Miami to party on his yacht in 2003. That would have been the summer before his senior year. The story contains a photo of Thomas on a boat with Miami players.
Thomas told Yahoo! that he believed he went on the yacht after his college career ended.
And Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez was allegedly a victim of Shapiro's Ponzi scheme that landed the booster in jail. Alvarez and his family have filed suit against Shapiro for $1 million they say they are owed.

Sports. "He was actually a kid that I liked probably more than any of the guys that I dealt with. He was really a good kid, tried hard, and was really, like, I don't know the word. He had a lot of spirit to him. He was a go-getter and he was a leader. He was always given the raw deal by (coach) Randy Shannon. I don't think they were ever fair with him.
"He was privy to my house. He came a number of times. I'd given him cash a few times. ... He was at the clubs with me a number of times."

"I met Benard Thomas once, the day he came with us on an all-day boat trip," Shapiro said. He was a friend of D.J. [Williams] from back when they both played high school football in California. I remember Benard telling me he played defensive end at Nebraska. It was on my boat, so I paid for everything. We had food and drinks and the usual things for that kind of trip.”
