Iowa announced Tuesday that it will honor the late U.S. Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson and others who died in service to their country at a home game in November.
The interesting part of the tribute involves a dog named "Hawkeye."
"Hawkeye" memorably lay next to Tumilson's casket during his funeral service last month. Tumilson, a native of Rockford, Iowa., was among 30 U.S. soldiers killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 6. He was 35.
"Jon’s death is a tragedy that reminds us of the great personal sacrifice made by many who serve our country, our state, and our community," Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said in a statement. " We are very pleased that Jon's family has agreed to allow us to honor Jon and all citizens lost while serving others later this fall."
A news release states Iowa will work with Tumilson's family to figure out what role "Hawkeye" will play on game day.
Could the dog lead the Hawkeyes out of the tunnel, as former Iowa player Jon Lazar suggested?
What an amazing moment that would be.
