Minnesota backsliding after opener

Minnesota didn't win last week at USC, but the Gophers played well enough to earn praise from all corners of the country.

Perhaps those kind words went to their heads.

If there's such a thing as a letdown after a loss, Minnesota is experiencing it right now. The Gophers trail New Mexico State, one of the worst FBS teams, by 14 points at home.

Jerry Kill's rebuilding project appears to be taking a step back. New Mexico State's Andrew Manley is shredding the Gophers' defense, completing 12 of 13 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Minnesota's MarQueis Gray has thrown an interception and looks shaky, and the Gophers' rushing attack is doing nothing.

Long way to go, but the Gophers had better pick up their play.
