Greetings from Columbus, my home for the next two days. I got an early start on my Big Ten chatter during the flight down, as I sat next to Scott Chipman, the league's assistant commissioner for communications.
The weather is beautiful and should remain that way through the game.
I'll be heading down to USC's walk-through at Ohio Stadium later this afternoon, so check back for updates.
- Iowa left tackle Bryan Bulaga likely will miss the Iowa State game with an undisclosed ailment, a source close to Bulaga tells me.
- Ohio State running back Brandon Saine was pleased with his opening act, Ken Gordon writes in The Columbus Dispatch. The Buckeyes have the edge in coaching experience, but their less experienced players haven't stepped up like USC's, Doug Lesmerises writes in The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Maybe Big Ten teams would win big games again if they were more media friendly (I can only dream), Chris Dufresne writes in the Los Angeles Times. Like other USC quarterbacks, Matt Barkley can handle the spotlight, colleague Pat Forde writes.
- All the numbers you need to know for Week 2 of Big Ten football, courtesy of the Big Ten Network's Dave Revsine.
- Both Michigan and Notre Dame are starting new chapters Saturday, Kelly Whiteside writes in USA Today. Wolverines defensive coordinator Greg Robinson thinks his Notre Dame counterpart, Jon Tenuta, is in for a long afternoon on Saturday, the Detroit Free Press' Mark Snyder writes in his blog. Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez calls wideout Junior Hemingway doubtful for the game, annarbor.com's Dave Birkett writes. The game will come down to the quarterbacks, The Sporting News' Dave Curtis writes.
- Ron Zook has Illinois' running game resting on a guy known as 'bucket of hair,' Shannon Ryan writes in the Chicago Tribune.
- Penn State defensive linemen Jared Odrick and Jerome Hayes know all about Syracuse quarterback Greg Paulus, Josh Langenbacher writes in The (Harrisburg) Patriot-News.
- Could President Obama attend Minnesota's opener in TCF Bank Stadium? The (St. Paul) Pioneer Press' Ben Ramsden dares to dream.
- Central Michigan hopes to repeat history at Spartan Stadium, Eric Lacy writes in The Detroit News.
- Wisconsin's offensive line looks a bit patchwork right now, and the results show, Jeff Potrykus writes in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
