MSU approves Dantonio's contract extension

Michigan State's Board of Trustees Friday announced contract extensions through 2016 for head football coach Mark Dantonio, athletic director Mark Hollis and head men's basketball coach Tom Izzo.

It's not huge news regarding Dantonio, who received a new contract in December that increased his overall annual compensation from $1.13 million to $1.8 million. But it reinforces the unity between Hollis, who received a three-year extension, and his two most prominent coaches.

Michigan State issued the following statement to ESPN.com regarding the announcement.

“It would be a mistake to see this as merely addressing continuity and stability. It recognizes role models who do things right and do the right things. This is about promulgating a Spartan superstar 'total package' literally and figuratively. Sure, it addresses continuity; sure, it addresses three big-time winners -- and it addresses their integrity. It’s a recognition of their worth and it’s a recognition of their value."

Izzo spoke about the importance of his connection with both Hollis and Dantonio when we talked last month in East Lansing.

"We had five ADs and five football coaches in my first 13 years, so there was no consistency," he said. "Hollis has made sure that we do not separate. The last time that the AD, the football coach, the basketball coach and the hockey coach were on the same page, we were really making some runs."
