Big Ten picks rewind: Week 6

Bennett fattened up during the nonconference slate, but we both know that Big Ten play separates the men from the boys. So far, I'm the Mike Gundy of this group (though a few years shy of 40).

Two weeks of Big Ten games are in the books, and I'm a perfect 11-0. While Bennett still leads in the overall standings, I'm comin' for him.

Adam Rittenberg: 5-0

Brian Bennett: 4-1

Bennett: 46-11 (.807)

Rittenberg: 44-13 (.772)

Here's a look back at the Week 6 predictions.

Now let's step into the rewind machine ...

Minnesota at Purdue

  • Bennett's pick: Purdue 28, Minnesota 17

  • Rittenberg's pick: Purdue 30, Minnesota 17

  • Actual score: Purdue 45, Minnesota 17

  • 20-20 hindsight: We both nailed the Gophers' score, but we both also thought Minnesota would be more competitive in this game. Purdue surged to a 31-0 lead and never looked back. Although Purdue QBs Caleb TerBush and Robert Marve made some plays, the run game and defense truly fueled the Boilers' victory.

Illinois at Indiana

  • Bennett's pick: Illinois 38, Indiana 14

  • Rittenberg's pick: Illinois 35, Indiana 17

  • Actual score: Illinois 41, Indiana 20

  • 20-20 hindsight: We both were in the ballpark on the score predictions. My prediction of a big day for Illinois QB Nathan Scheelhaase and WR A.J. Jenkins came true, as they connected for two long touchdown passes. Another forecast of mine, Illinois forcing two Indiana turnovers, also proved correct. Bennett's pick of a 100-yard rushing effort for Illinois' Donovonn Young fell short by 27 yards.

Iowa at Penn State

  • Bennett's pick: Iowa 23, Penn State 16

  • Rittenberg's pick: Penn State 12, Iowa 10

  • Actual score: Penn State 13, Iowa 3

  • 20-20 hindsight: I nailed the Nebraska-Wyoming score a few weeks ago, but this might be my pick of the year so far. Many Iowa fans doubted me, but Penn State's defense is for real and shut down James Vandenberg and his receivers. The Lions' offense wasn't great by any means but showed some encouraging signs in the run game.

Michigan at Northwestern

  • Bennett's pick: Michigan 35, Northwestern 28

  • Rittenberg's pick: Michigan 38, Northwestern 30

  • Actual score: Michigan 42, Northwestern 24

  • 20-20 hindsight: Our score predictions would have been a bit closer had Northwestern not fallen part in the second half. As we thought, Denard Robinson was too much for Northwestern and overcame three first-half turnovers to rack up 450 offensive yards and four touchdowns (2 rush, 2 pass). Bennett's prediction of a productive day for Northwestern's Dan Persa (331 pass yards) and Jeremy Ebert (11 receptions, 86 yards) came true.

Ohio State at Nebraska

  • Bennett's pick: Nebraska 24, Ohio State 16,

  • Rittenberg's pick: Nebraska 27, Ohio State 14

  • Actual score: Nebraska 34, Ohio State 27

  • 20-20 hindsight: Neither of us forecast the biggest comeback in Nebraska history, that's for sure. Bennett accurately predicted a better day for Ohio State's run game (243 yards), and the Buckeyes did benefit from a Taylor Martinez turnover late in the first half. But Martinez and RB Rex Burkhead came up big in the second half for Big Red.
