Big Ten picks rewind: Week 7

Bennett is enjoying fantasy land, but here in the real world, he's hearing footsteps.

After a slow start, I have caught up to my co-blogger in predictions. I've been perfect in the first three weeks of Big Ten play, going 16-for-16 in league games. Bennett has had several misses, and he'll need to rebound in Week 8.

Adam Rittenberg: 5-0

Brian Bennett: 3-2

Bennett: 49-13 (.790)

Rittenberg: 49-13 (.790)

Here's a look back at the Week 7 predictions.

It's rewind time ...

Michigan at Michigan State

  • Bennett's pick: Michigan State 24, Michigan 20

  • Rittenberg's pick: Michigan State 23, Michigan 21

  • Actual score: Michigan State 28, Michigan 14

  • 20-20 hindsight: We both predicted a much closer game, but Bennett correctly forecast Denard Robinson's mistakes catching up to him. Michigan State forced just one turnover, not three, but recorded a pick-six against Robinson. The Spartans got more than enough from their run game, especially junior Edwin Baker (26 carries, 167 yards, TD).

Purdue at Penn State

  • Bennett's pick: Penn State 20, Purdue 7

  • Rittenberg's pick: Penn State 24, Purdue 13

  • Actual score: Penn State 23, Purdue 18

  • 20-20 hindsight: We both were close on Penn State's score, and my prediction of rushing touchdowns for both Silas Redd and Curtis Dukes came true. Purdue also continued to make too many major mistakes, as I predicted. Bennett correctly predicted another nice game for Devon Still, but Purdue moved the ball better than we thought it would against the Lions.

Indiana at Wisconsin

  • Bennett's pick: Wisconsin 58, Indiana 17

  • Rittenberg's pick: Wisconsin 54, Indiana 10

  • Actual score: Wisconsin 59, Indiana 7

  • 20-20 hindsight: This one played out more or less like we both thought it would. Bennett correctly predicted four touchdowns for Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, although he didn't see one of those coming by virtue of a pass to quarterback Russell Wilson. My prediction of two touchdowns for running back James White fell one score short.

Ohio State at Illinois

  • Bennett's pick: Illinois 17, Ohio State 14

  • Rittenberg's pick: Ohio State 21, Illinois 20

  • Actual score: Ohio State 17, Illinois 7

  • 20-20 hindsight: We both forecast a low-scoring affair, although neither of us thought Ohio State would win despite completing just one pass (and attempting only four). Buckeyes running back Dan Herron scored one touchdown, not the two I predicted. While Illinois defenders Whitney Mercilus and Jonathan Brown spent a lot of time in the Ohio State backfield, the Buckeyes' defense made more plays at key times.

Northwestern at Iowa

  • Bennett's pick: Northwestern 38, Iowa 35

  • Rittenberg's pick: Iowa 27, Northwestern 24

  • Actual score: Iowa 41, Northwestern 31

  • 20-20 hindsight: Bennett had the closer score prediction, but he had the wrong team on top as Iowa torched Northwestern in the fourth quarter for 24 points. Wildcats quarterback Dan Persa had nice numbers, but his pick-six in the first quarter put Northwestern in a major hole. While Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg hit on several big pass plays to his receivers, as I predicted, it was running back Marcus Coker who sparked the offense late in the game.
